Have you noticed porn having a detrimental effect on you or someone you know recently? If so, you’re not alone. Considering how much pornography is consumed every year. It’s no surprise that porn addiction side effects are very real.

According to statistics, the world’s most popular porn website, Pornhub, receives over 14 billion views annually. That’s around 1,680,000 visits per hour, every hour. If that isn’t alarming enough, 20% of men and 13% of women admit to watching adult content while at work.

This poses severe issues to one’s psychological health including depression, anxiety, insomnia, and in extreme cases, suicidal tendencies. Excessive porn viewing can also have an adverse effect on one’s attention span.

It usually occurs gradually over time and without warning. However, if one can notice the symptoms early on, it’s easy to find a cure. If you notice your concentration weakening, it is a sign to stop watching porn by replacing it with another habit.

Decreased Attention Span – One of the Worst Porn Addiction Side Effects

Being able to concentrate on stuff is the key driver to success in that matter. But what if you’re not able to concentrate at all?

Here are 5 ways in which every porn video you watch. Every bunch of web pages that you skim through is doing you real harm.

It Promotes Instant Gratification

Instant gratification is the desire to attain pleasure immediately after performing an action. While this may sound harmless on the surface level, it holds many complexities that can spell disaster for the individual. This is arguably the worst among the porn addiction side effects.

It’s a tricky situation, too. It seems to make sens that we should do things that make us happy. Why shouldn’t I drink this bottle of wine when I know that it will give me an instant feeling of happiness and relaxation? Why shouldn’t I log on to the internet and watch porn for 4 hours straight when I know it will satisfy me sexually and I’ll feel good after?

The answer is simple. It’s because not everything that feels good, is good for you. It’s counterintuitive, but one of the biggest secrets in life – sometimes, doing what doesn’t feel great in the moment brings you massive rewards later on. Think of working out, practicing sports or even just painting a picture. Those things take time and effort, but bring you great satisfaction and results in due time.

Examples of activities that provide instant gratification are drugs, video games, and pornography. They are inherently habit-forming and highly addictive. It allows for an easy fix to obtaining pleasure without needing to put in any effort. This can have severe consequences for you and the people around you. They may notice you becoming distant and irritable, causing you to begin on a downward spiral into loneliness and depression.

Pornography is Too Easily Accessible

Today, anybody with a device connected to the internet can easily access erotic content. There are no real barriers of entry stopping an underage individual from viewing it. While there are laws that prevent certain activities related to porn and underage users, they’re difficult to implement and enforce without the full cooperation of internet service providers.

The fact that it’s so easy to get to it means that eventually it will lose its charm. There’s no challenge, no struggle, no difficulty in obtaining it, and we all know that where there’s no challenge, there’s less interest. Eventually, we just get sick of being able to type in the URL and get started doing something we know deep down we shouldn’t even be doing.

This source of easy dopamine can wreak havoc on your brain’s reward system. It can cause you to lose interest in real-life which may require more effort to produce the same result. As a consequence, this leads to lowered concentration and shortened attention spans.

It Causes One to Become Desensitized

Never before has pleasure been so easily accessible. In the real world, one has to put in a fair amount of effort in order to be rewarded by the brain with dopamine. In ancient times, man would have to go out and hunt for his food, which required a considerable amount of effort, before he could receive a hit of pleasure-inducing dopamine. One would have to go out in the real world to find a suitable mate in order to have sex and feel the same pleasure.

Today it’s all too easy with the internet and a few simple clicks, one can drench their minds in pleasure with practically no effort. This is teaching your brain that it shouldn’t be trying so hard to achieve happiness. This is training your brain to believe that happiness should be just a click away. However, real life doesn’t work like this. We all have challenges in life that we have to go through which require considerable time, energy and effort in order to succeed at. At those particular times, there is a conflict inside the mind as to whether or not it’s really required, only because our brains are so used to instant gratification because porn is so easily accessible.

This clearly leads to a reduced effort invested in real-life activities like work and school, causing a noticeable reduction in attention span. It’s unhealthy and often goes unnoticed. Don’t worry though, because there are many ways that the mind can be trained to change back to the way that it was before. Doing slower activities like reading, drawing, painting, yoga and even meditation can calm the brain down and lower its activity levels to a much more somber level.

Leads to Constant Distraction

Our brains are constantly on the lookout for happiness. They will latch on to sources of dopamine and attempt to form habits. Whether it is from positive activities like exercise and general fitness, or from destructive activities like drugs, alcohol, or porn.

Porn is a highly addictive behaviour and studies show it may even rewire our brains entirely for the way they process stimulation. When we watch inappropriate content, we are literally training our brains for what it should expect and react to. This is why it feels so strange at first but over time we begin getting used to it and eventually get addicted to it. Our brains are being trained to believe that this is what love is, and that this is what to expect when sexually aroused – pixels on a screen of paid actors performing seemingly unnatural activities.

Also, it leads to constant distraction because over time, this is what your brain craves and desires over and above anything else. It’s a combination of it being an easy activity, fast dopamine and the fact that it requires minimum effort. The next time you try doing something even remotely challenging, your brain thinks that it’s too hard and would rather watch porn because it’s easier fun.

It is our willpower and conscientiousness that will allow us to cultivate good habits instead of bad ones. Good habits promote a positive, healthy lifestyle while bad habits lead us into several psychological problems. Examples are addiction, depression, and also a reduced attention span.

Leads to Disinterest in Life Activities

Porn acts like a virus hijacking your brain to produce dopamine and serotonin for you at inappropriate times. Our bodies were made to mate with our partners to form closer bonds and produce offspring. They weren’t made to consume erotic content on the internet alone in our rooms. Once getting your fix is as easy as logging on to a site, you will lose interest in real-life. Why bother interacting in real life, when you could be satisfied easily all by yourself with less time and effort?

The danger is how easily it can happen without us even noticing. Eventually it becomes all we want and all we crave. There are individuals who are so addicted that they would rather stay home and watch porn rather than going out with their partner and spending time in the real world.

This is the logical reasoning your brain is going through while it creates an addiction to pornography. It’s quick and easy. It costs you nothing (unless you have a subscription, which you might want to cancel) and it does the job. Now this is the reason your mind doesn’t want to engage in other activities. It’s only because it’s already getting all it’s happiness and satisfaction from porography and other activities just seem too hard and challenging. This is one of the main reasons for a reduced attention span.

Going Forward..

Disinterest and a shortened attention span are only the first of the porn addiction side effects. Greater depression and exclusion from society that can occur with continued use of pornography. We suggest installing porn blockers like BlockerX on your devices if you feel your habit is getting out of control.

Its incredible how detrimental porn addiction side effects can be can have on a person without them even being aware of it happening. This is partially because the change is so gradual that most people would never even know what to look for. Sometimes, no matter how conscious we are, things happen and that’s okay.

The positive side is that none of the negative effects we’ve discussed are permanent. You can turn it around at any time by just changing your behaviours. Eventually, your attention span will return back to normal and it’ll be like there never was a problem in the first place.

Honestly, quitting porn is one of the best things anybody can do. Imagine all the free time and extra energy you would have. I would suggest cancelling any subscriptions and installing a porn blocker like BlockerX just for those times that you might feel like relapsing.

If you’ve been thinking about quitting, go ahead and do it today. It could be holding you back from living your best life!

  1. All of the above.
    – distractedness, can’t focus on things that are hard
    – desensitization, not feeling like working for happiness
    – disinterest in real life activities, I end up feeling so guilty and shameful that I don’t think I deserve good things.

I have been running more lately. I will try drawing and painting more. Thank you for the article.

  2. So true, I hate the modern worlds attitude of ‘if it feels good then its OK’ applies to many more sex behaviours than just porn. Try making that point tho and you get laughed at. Porn should be much more difficult to access
