Are Children More Susceptible to Porn?

You need to protect your kids from porn, from a very young age. This is because children learn the most through observation. They usually do what they observe. If the child observes that someone is engaged in pornographic activities, the possibility of the child showing this behavior is very high.

In addition, any type of addiction in the family will make the child more likely to become addicted. Pornographic content is easy to obtain. Hence, its anonymous identity makes it easier for children to participate in the behavior because it is very stimulating.

Many believe that teenagers are the age when children are more receptive to new experiences. Hence parents need to be more careful about their children’s use of technology.

Most parents think this is a stage, and children will overcome it soon. The sad fact is that they will get obsessed with this behavior and will eventually have to seek treatment.

Kids and Technology- How to Mentor my Child?

When parents step up to mentor kids, kids can learn to use technology in responsible and ethical ways. Here are some practices that you can incorporate into your life:

  • Teach children about the appropriate use of technology.
  • Tell about what is appropriate and what is inappropriate.
  • Decide about where technology needs to be accessed (the place in the house) also involve children in this decision.
  • The timings of the technology are to be fixed.
  • Choose an activity that will distract your brain. You can sing a song, finish homework, do a chore, serve a family member, etc.

What to do if you Discover That Your Child is Viewing Porn?

Now is the time to educate yourselves and your children regarding how to protect your kids from porn. Until the world awakens to the significant threat of this issue, we need to do all we can to help those around us. Here is what you should do:

  • Keep calm- Even though you may feel fear, anger, or guilt, do not “react” in front of your child.  Your initial response will determine how your child approaches you regarding this issue in the future, so you want to be sure you have the help of the Lord. Remember who the enemy is: Porn is the enemy, not your child.
  • Collect your thoughts– Tell your child you love them and that you want to talk with them about this issue but that you need to take a few minutes to think. Say a prayer, read scripture, talk to your spouse, do what you need to in order to keep calm and feel the Lord’s loving guidance.
  • Make a plan of action- Resources, provided below, offer insights and suggestions as to where to begin on your journey towards healing. Seek the guidance of a loving Heavenly Father in deciding which strategies will best help your child and your family.
  • Communicate- Communication is very important so as to know how the child feels about the addiction and whether he wishes to continue. Encourage your child at all times to overcome the problem without giving up.
  • Actively brainstorm- Come up with ideas with your kids about the positive and negative of technology. Limit television and internet time and use filters to ensure there is no access to watch porn stuffs. Place computers and television in an area that’s clearly visible to everyone. That way, there is less or no chance for your child to get into such obscene acts.

Educate Yourself on your Child’s Sexual Development

Children are sexual beings from the moment of conception. Even young children can learn about sex in negative and positive ways.

Understanding the child’s developmental patterns is very important to cultivate children’s natural interest in “where babies come from”. You to protect them from age-inappropriate materials, language, or media that may cause premature hypersexuality.

Most parents are ashamed of talking about pornography with their children. Hence there is a tremendous rise in the rate of children who often use pornographic content. In this case, the parents do not know how to deal with it. Know who to turn to, especially if you are becoming an addict.

Teach children about digital citizenship. Digital citizenship includes the conscious use of technology, avoiding and rejecting the bad, especially the good. This also includes the ethical and productive use of digital tools. This way, you will be able to protect your kids from porn and all the other inappropriate content.
