The Most Common Porn Myths

Porn has been taboo for the longest time possible. In fact, some people still find sex talk unacceptable. And if one is associated with porn in any way, they are looked down upon. There are of course many reasons why porn carries the stigma of judgment. And one of those is because of the various porn myths that most of us have ended up accepting as the truth.

But in reality, my friend, myths don’t make up the truth. Just to give you an example, at some point we have all thought about how much porn stars must enjoy their jobs, seeing as they literally get to have sex all day and get paid for it. Well, unfortunately, that is not true. Rather, that is a giant porn myth that has been perpetuated.

In fact, porn stars have claimed that sex on set is just a part of their jobs and they do not enjoy it. Rather, at times these porn stars, during the scenes have had distracting thoughts about the smallest of things such as what they are going to be eating for lunch. Surprising isn’t it?

That is how porn myths work, they can be so elaborate and so generalised that you simply end up believing them without thinking so much about them. And so today, we will discuss a few of these porn myths, which you must have ended up believing in, at one point or other.

Porn Myth: All porn is the same.

Fact: Pornography covers a wide range of genres, themes, and content, and not all of it is the same. There are many different types of porn, including amateur, professional, fetish, and more, and each type has its own unique characteristics and appeal.

This is one of the most common porn myths that has been believed by most people who watch porn. We thought that the porn industry has established itself by just making certain types of porn with the only variant being the stories. Well, once you sit down to research porn, you will realise that the industry is worth $97 Billion, and has been carefully built to meet the drastically different sexual requirements of its users, and thus you need to explore more about the industry and unearth all you have been missing out on that the industry has to offer.

Porn Myth: All porn is violent and degrading to women.

porn is degrading to women

Fact: While some porn may depict violent or degrading scenes, this is not true for all porn. In fact, there are many types of porn that are entirely consensual, non-violent, oriented to meet the needs of a woman rather than a man and respectful of all participants.

We agree that generally, you may come across porn that seems violent and degrading to women wherein the story generally depicts women having to indulge in sexual activities without their free will or mood to indulge in the same. However, that is not always the case.

If that does not work for you, and you instead want to explore sex which is “vanilla” so to speak, and does not show the female characters in it just as sex objects, then trust me, do not give up hope. Because the porn industry also has a side to it wherein they show a more authentic type of sex as it works out in real life by being non-violent and respectful to the women involved.

Porn Myth: Watching porn is harmful to relationships.

porn is harmful for relationships

Fact: This is a common porn myth, but it is not supported by research. In fact, some studies have shown that couples who watch porn together can improve their communication, trust, and sexual satisfaction.

As we all know, too much of anything is not good for anyone, the same is applicable to porn and its usage. Generally speaking, watching porn with your partner is going to help you explore a more intimate relationship. Enjoying porn together whether through print media and books or through the internet and movies, will help you understand a lot about each other’s sexual preferences. You can even discuss anything specific that you would like your partner to do in the bedroom.

Porn only becomes a problem between a couple when one of the partners fails to respect the boundaries of their partner. Furthermore, porn also becomes a problem between two people when they start expecting their sex life to resemble what is shown in porn.

What they fail to realise is that, in order to create what is shown on the screen, it takes a big team of people working together for weeks or months to finally be able to capture the moments as shown in porn films. While sex is a spontaneous act of passion between two people which does not take rehearsal or a team to work out.

Porn Myth: Only men watch porn.

women watch porn

Fact: This is another common porn myth, but it is not true. In fact, many women watch and enjoy porn, and there are many different types of porn that are specifically made for and by women.

In fact, it is generally believed that women stay far away from anything to do with obscenities such as porn and sex. Well, believe us when we tell you that this couldn’t be farther from the truth. In fact, there are clinical studies that show women are active consumers of porn. As per a study published by the Deccan Herald, 33% of women watch pornography every week, and around 31% watch it a couple of times a month. And the porn industry is well aware of the women’s group that makes up a large section of their consumers.

The only thing is that women are usually looking for pornographic content that is vastly different from what males are looking for, and thus the porn industry, to cater to the needs of their female viewers, has curated certain genres dedicated to the general requirements of a woman browsing through porn.

Porn Myth: Porn is only for sexual gratification.

Fact: While porn can certainly be used for sexual gratification, that is not its only purpose. Many people watch porn for a variety of reasons, including curiosity, to learn about different sexual practices, or simply for entertainment.

The general understanding of porn is that one watches it to be able to self-help in order to gain an orgasm. While that is the general output expected (no pun intended), sometimes it is simply about learning more about sex and the various ways to do it. Yes, there is more than one way to do it, which you can learn about through the means of pornography.

Sometimes, porn is all about being a means of entertainment and passing time, and there is nothing more to it. So the myth that if one is watching porn, they are definitely looking for an orgasm is nothing but a very bizarre porn myth.

Porn Myth: All porn stars are drug addicts and have been victims of abuse.

drug abuse

Fact: This is a common stereotype, but it is not true of all porn stars. Like any other industry, there are some people in the porn industry who have experienced abuse or struggled with addiction, but this is not true of everyone.

One generally thinks that there is no sane reason for one to become a part of the porn industry. This has led to a stereotype being created about porn stars, in the context that they are all drug addicts, have had a horrible childhood, or have faced abuse of some kind or another.

Well, that is just a myth. In fact, most porn stars have claimed to be a part of the industry because they believe it to be a form of art, and they are artists living a story on the screen. Others have said that they are a part of the industry merely because it pays well and they enjoy the work.

While, it is true that there are a bunch of porn stars who have been abused at some point in their lives, and others who have resorted to drugs and other forms of addiction in order to cope with the industry, that has been the case with most other industries as well, such as Hollywood or the fashion industry. And thus, stereotyping the actors in the porn industry based on this common porn myth is definitely not the right thing to do.

Porn Myth: Porn is illegal.

porn is illegal

Fact: In most countries, pornography is legal as long as it involves consenting adults and it fits within the legal framework of the particular country in question. However, there are some exceptions to this, and it is important to check the laws in your specific country or region.

In most countries, porn is not illegal as long as you are watching it in private. There are certain regulations that accompany the porn industry, much like any other industry, but it is certainly not outright illegal. One of the prerequisites, however, is that everyone who is a part of the industry is doing so of their own free will and has not been coerced into doing the same in any manner.

Having said that, there are certain countries that have stricter regulations than others with regard to porn, and thus you must check out the rule in your respective region to be sure that you are not in any kind of trouble for watching porn.

Porn Myth: Porn is immoral.

Fact: This is a matter of personal opinion, and different people may have different views on the morality of porn. Some people believe that porn is immoral because it goes against the principles of many religions and therefore tends to offend people. Other people believe that it objectifies and exploits people. There are very few people that are open to the benefits that porn can bring to a person.

It is not unusual for people to hold varied opinions about a particular matter, and the same is true about pornography as well; after all, there are still people who believe that sex is taboo.

The belief that pornography in itself is a problem and immoral, is nothing but a commonly believed porn myth. This is because porn in itself is not a problem, in fact, it can act as a form of self-expression. Moreover, a large chunk of benefits both mental and physical can be accrued from the general act of sex. It only becomes a problem when you let it consume you and indulge in it, and it becomes more to you than a form of entertainment and expression.

Final Words

There is a lot of baggage that porn carries with itself, merely because we have resorted to believing in all the porn myths doing the rounds. It is time to correct our mistakes and educate ourselves about the great things porn can do for us and our sex lives. It is time we take the first step and let go of the stigma
